Rivers Division Contest Results

Congratulations to our club members, Vicki Stephenson and Brian Flagg, for their excellent performances in the River Division Fall Contest on September 23, 2010! Brian Flagg won Third Place in the Table Topics Contest! Here are the names of all the winners:

It was a fun night! We were entertained with funny stories about wives overhearing their husband’s REAL thoughts about them, about a mom who is a super hero to her kids, and why you should always be careful when sledding.

Filling Space

Ideas for what to do when you have no speakers.

• Ask more Table Topics questions (we often do this)
• Have everyone conduct a personality test and then discuss what officer roles each person would best fulfill based on the results of the test.
• A seasoned member could give a “canned speech” from one of the “Successful Club Series” manuals.
• Go over the manuals, including the advanced manuals available.
• Discuss club business, including open-ended topics, such as “How could we improve the club?”.

Club & Area Contest Results

It’s fall and that means CONTEST TIME! The Big Apple held their club contest on August 19. Participants included:

Humorous Contest: Vicki Stephenson and Brian Flagg

Table Topics: Amy Frisina, Alyce Flowers, Brian Flagg and Jon Jukich.

In a rare event, both Vicki and Brian got First Place in the Humorous Contest. In Table Topics, Brian Flagg received First Place and Alyce Flowers received Second Place. Since the top two competitors of each contest are allowed to go on to compete at the next level, all four went on to compete at the Area 73 contest on August 21st.

At the Area 73 contest, The Big Apple did very well! In the Humorous Contest, Vicki Stephenson received First Place and Brian Flagg received Second Place. In the Table Topics Contest, Brian Flagg also received Second Place. Vicki will go on to compete at the Rivers Division Contest. Brian Flagg will also move to the next level since the First Place winner cannot attend.

Visitors are welcome! Contests are a perfect opportunity for non-members to get a taste of Toastmasters. Big Apple members are encouraged to attend to cheer on Vicki and Brian.

Club Contest Coming Soon

Don’t forget! The club speech contest is Thursday, August 19th at our usual meeting place. Guests are welcome! If you’re a member and would like to participate, let our VPE know. The contest subjects will be Humorous Speeches and Table Topics.

Winners of our club contest will go on  to compete in the Area contest which will be held Saturday, August 21st.

TMOTY: Brian Flagg

This year our club has chosen Brian Flagg as Toastmaster of the Year! Brian has accomplished much and has done a lot for our club, both as President and as a member. He even gave a speech at a local college to promote Toastmasters and our club. That’s going the extra mile. Congratulations, Brian!

• Dennis Feller – * Though Dennis is a member of the club, he is not eligible for this award because he is our Area Governor.* He served as Area 73 Governor. He also ran a Speechcraft.

• Brian Flagg – Served as President. Earned his CL. Expects to have AC-Bronze completed end of June. Won First Place in our club Tall Tales Contest. Won First Place in the Area 73 Tall Tales Contest. Chaired or Fall Speech Contest. Assisted Dennis Feller with Speechcraft. Made an appearance as representative of Toastmasters (gave a speech entitled “Why Public Speaking” at Dakota County Technical College Marketing and Sales class).

The Big Apple Toastmasters newsletter “Big Apple Slices” won First Place in the Toastmasters newsletter contest for 2010! Vicki Stephenson, current VP PRE and creator of the newsletter, was presented with an award by Area 73 Governor Dennis Feller.
